The city of Boise, Idaho is the largest city in the state. It also serves as the state capital. With a city population of 211,473 and a metropolitan area of well over a half-million people, the city is most definitely considered to be the governmental, cultural, and economic center of the state. The city is located on a wide, flat plain with a semi-arid climate. Although the summers can be extremely hot and dry, the winters are bitterly cold and marked by fair amounts of snowfall. The city is located near both the Boise and Snake Rivers. Known as “The City of Trees,” Boise’s arid outskirts draw a sharp contrast to the wealth of green, lush trees that grow within the city’s limits.

Boise began much like many other cities in the middle of the United States as a fort for the U.S. Army. Since its inception in the 1800s, the city has grown into a major economic force in its region. The city is home to several major Idaho and national companies, such as Cascade LLC, New Albertsons Inc., Albertsons LLC, J.R. Simplot Company, Idaho Pacific Lumber Company, Idaho Timber Corporation, WinCo Foods and Hewlett Packard's printer division. Micron Technology is the city’s largest employer. There is also a strong manufacturing sector within the city.

The city of Boise is divided into several sections: Downtown, The North End, Southwest, Northwest, Warm Springs, East End, South East, The Boise Bench, and West Boise. Surrounding towns and cities include: Eagle, Nampa, Meridian, Caldwell, Emmett, Ustick, Star, Middleton, Enrose, Bowmont, Kuna, Mora, Pearl, and Greenleaf.
