About Honolulu, HI
While the breadth of the American landscape is quite large and diverse, no state in the continental United States – including Florida – bares even a close resemblance to Hawaii. With its lush, tropical flora, foreboding volcanoes, and exotic Polynesian culture, the image of Hawaii is synonymous with paradise. On the island of Oahu, the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago stands the breathtaking metropolis of Honolulu.
Although Honolulu ranks currently as the 45th largest city in the United States by population, the city itself feels much smaller. This is due to the fact that the city limits of Honolulu include the entire population of Oahu Island. The city of Honolulu dates far back as a settlement – perhaps farther back than any other city in the entire United States. Although no written historical documents exist – the ancient Polynesian culture did not keep written records early on in its history – it is believed that Polynesians settled in Oahu as early as the twelfth century, some 300 years before Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas.
Because the Hawaiians have inhabited the Hawaiians for so many centuries, their traditional island culture is ingrained into the culture and identity of Honolulu. Although the city is now quite modern and supports one of the most celebrated resort communities in the world, Hawaiian culture is still profoundly present in the city’s language, cuisine, music, arts, architecture, dance, and folklore. Unlike other resort cities that are purposely “themed,” the Polynesian theme found throughout Hawaii is indeed authentic.
There are several neighborhoods that comprise Honolulu. They include: Downtown Honolulu, Kaka’ako, Waikiki, Manoa, Makiki, and Kaalihi. Some of the outlying towns on the island of Oahu include: Maili, Nanakuli, Ewa Beach, Kailua, Ahuimanu, Makaha, Waianae, Honokai Hale, Aiea, and Maunawili.
