About Jacksonville, FL
Much of the popularity of Florida as a travel and vacation destination is based on the resort cities located in Florida’s panhandle. Little do people realize that, located on the northeastern corner of the state, the City of Jacksonville stands as one of the most exciting, ever-expanding cities in the United States. For the past 40 years, Jacksonville has had the distinction of being the largest city in the U.S. based on its land area. In short, the city limits sprawl out from its modern, cosmopolitan skyline to include the temperate, sub-tropical suburbs tucked away along brackish canals and creeks that lead to the warm Atlantic Ocean’s waters. Up until the mid 1800s, Jacksonville was known as Cowford, named after a narrow ford where cattle could be driven across the nearby St. Johns River. It was finally named after President Andrew Jackson, who served as the first military governor of Florida.
The name of the city isn’t all that has changed in the long, intriguing history of Jacksonville. It has grown to become the third most populated city on the East Coast, only after New York City and Philadelphia. In addition to its successful professional football team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacksonville has become a city of cultural versions, from annual jazz and film festivals to a lively nightlife and restaurant scene. It is unlike many other cities in Florida in that it less focused on tourism and instead boasts a robust commercial and banking district.
Having subsumed all of the outlying municipalities into its city limits in the 1960s, Jacksonville’s neighborhoods are divided up into six major sections and are generally sprawling and far-reaching in their geographical scope. They are: greater Arlington, North Jacksonville, Northwest Jacksonville, Southeast and Southwest Jacksonville, and the Urban Core, a smaller designation that encompasses the downtown area of the city. Many of the towns and neighborhoods in these sections have strong, independent identities since, for quite a long period of time in Jacksonville’s history, they were not considered a part of the city limits. The towns of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra, and Palm Valley comprise the beachfront regions around the city, where towns like Mayport, Middleburg, Orange Park, Fruit Cove, Highland, St. George, Moniac, and Taylor comprise the inland communities that border Jacksonville.
