Known as the “City of Water, Wealth, Contentment, and Health,” the lovely city of Modesto, California lives up to its nickname. This charming city of over 200,000 resident is about 110 miles from Yosemite National Park, and 80 miles from the state capital, Sacramento.  The town’s name, “Modesto,” literally means “modest” in Spanish. The name came about when William C. Ralston, a Californian developer, declined to have the new railroad station named after him. A Spanish-speaking railroad worker commented that Ralston was “muy modesto” for declining such an invitation. This is how the city received its name.

While the city of Modesto has been known as an agricultural center for most of its existence – a common trait in inland Californian cities – the agrarian industry in the city has begun to wane. Instead, many of its inhabitants merely reside in Modesto, but choose to commute to work in other commercially oriented cities. Over twenty percent of the city’s populace commutes to work outside of the count each day.

While the official nickname of the city, “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health,” may seem a bit vague and esoteric, it was a better choice than the original winning slogan, "Nobody's got Modesto's goat," taken from a competition held in 1911. The city does live up to its lofty motto, however, as the city is known to have a high standard of living among its residents.
