About Tucson, AZ
Located on Santa Cruz River, a dry river bed much of the year that occasionally turns into a fast-flowing torrent of flood water, the desert city of Tucson, Arizona is a testament to the dry, rugged beauty of the southwestern region of the United States. The city sits quite high above sea level – 2,389 feet – and rests on an alluvial plain in the Sonoran desert. Surrounding this majestic, desert city are five smaller mountain ranges: the Santa Catalina Mountains, the Tortolita Mountains, the Santa Rita Mountains, the Rincon Mountains, and the Tucson Mountains. The city’s high point, Mount Lemmon, is a popular ski destination and offers a fascinating landscape where snowy peaks can coincide so closely with hot, desert terrain.
Interestingly enough, the city’s name Tucson comes from Native American roots and translates to “at the base of the black hill.” This name is most likely in reference to an ancient volcanic mountain adjacent to the city. Because of its ancient roots with Native people, the city is often referred to affectionately as “The Old Pueblo.”
The sunny disposition of Tucson makes it an ideal location for collecting solar power, and the city is in the planning stages of taking advantage of this sustainable energy source. The city has a look and feel that includes Spanish, Mexican, and Pueblo influences, and it can be seen in the city’s architecture, food, and culture. Many of the early neighborhoods have a strong Native American influence. Some of them include: El Presidio, Barrio Histórico, Armory Park; Barrio Anita, named for an early settler, and El Jardín. Surrounding towns and cities include: Mescal, Pantano, Vail, Sahuarita, San Xavier, Corona De Tucson, Summerhaven, Redington, Cortaro, and Cascabel.
