With a city population of 142,024 residents, the city of Peoria, Arizona is one of the largest and more populous suburbs of Phoenix. The city is also considered to be the fourth largest city in the state of Arizona based on its land mass, and ninth in the state based on its population. It is believed that the name of the city “peoria’ is a variant of a Native American Illini word that, loosely translated, means “raging prairie fire.” The city is built on a largely flat and dry plain in the Salt River Valley, however seasonal rainfall as well as snowmelt runoff from the nearby mountains can overwhelm the desert-like land and cause flooding. Early pioneers in the late 1800s had to address the constant, destructive cycle of flooding and drought by creating an extensive irrigation system that transformed the area into a habitable agrarian community.

Today, the city serves as a popular suburban center and residential community for people who work in Phoenix. Because housing prices tend to be lower in Peoria than they are in Phoenix, Peoria has become a kind of “bedroom community,” with many of the city’s population commuting out of the city for work each day.
