About Birmingham, AL
With almost 250,000 residents, the city of Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. Its name comes from the English city of the same name, known as an industrial powerhouse starting in the 1800s. Birmingham also bears the nickname “Pittsburgh of the South” for the same reason: after the end of the Civil War, the city was established as an industrial center. The city was an early powerhouse in iron and steel production, and as a result, it grew exponentially fast both in wealth and population. This identity as the leading industrial manufacturing city of the south continued on in the middle of the 20th century.
While the manufacturing industry remains quite strong in Birmingham, the second half of the 20th century has seen a diversification of the city’s commercial focus. Now, corporations within the city work in the banking, insurance, medicine, publishing, and biotechnology sectors. Because of its wide diversification, Birmingham consistently ranks as one of the top cities for income growth in the United States South with a significant increase in per capita income since 1990. The city has become a major banking center for the entire U.S., with its one Fortune 500 Company, Regions Financial, working within the financial sector.
In spite of its hard-working character, the city of Birmingham is also the cultural center for the state of Alabama. The Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Ballet, Birmingham Concert Chorale, Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, and Opera Birmingham are all located within the city limits. The city also offers an exciting nightlife, complete with fine restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and music venues.
