Bachelor’s degree, Biological Sciences

Special Needs: ?
I am a recent college graduate with a degree in biological sciences. Although my education was geared towards the physical sciences, my talents also lie in writing, literature, mathematics, and research. My approach is different than how material is taught in the classroom, instead of learning through rote memorization, I strive for an understanding of the subject matter. When something is understood, one never needs to memorize.
We learn new things everyday with great ease, yet when it comes to school work, students often find it difficult to understand what is being taught, and how to use it in the future. This is because our mind gives greater value to the things that interest us. It is therefore paramount for the teacher to present material in such a way that the student finds it not only interesting, but important.
One question students commonly ask is, "when am I ever going to need to use this?" To the student, the material they are being taught seems useless, and therefore unimportant to learn. It is with no surprise then that so many students either never properly learn a subject, or forget it once they have been tested on it. This is not learning, and is a waste of the students time. In my approach to tutoring, I will make the subject matter interesting and fun to learn by highlighting its importance, applying it to the students own interests, and giving it a real-world application.
With each student, I strive to achieve a comfortable learning environment that is free from pressure or judgment.
