TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy revolves around the belief that education, whether it is class based or hands on, are essential building blocks in students becoming more independent thinkers. Thus, preparing them for real life experiences on the subject matter they are learning.
While I was in school I began realized that some teachers took real pride in their work, they loved the fact that they got to go and make a difference in young minds every day. These were the ones that the students admired and respected. Their classes were always filled and attendance was impeccable. They were great teachers that not only taught but were willing to learn as well. As educators we take on a responsibility to assist our students in acquiring the necessary tools to succeed in academia and onward. Excellent or poor preparation by an educator can directly translate to how their students learn and how involved they become in the subject matter.
In my philosophy, students should be taught to think more independently. Lectures and thought provoking questions should be asked to help each student work through problems at their own pace as well as prompt them to ask questions. As we know from our own days in college, asking a question in class is not always easy. So, the teacher should try to establish a working relationship with his/her students to lessen tension during lectures. In my own teaching experiences, appealing to the students’ age range and interests gave me the chance to not only connect with my students but made the learning experience more appealing.
The main challenge, apart from making sure the student actually retains the subject matter rather than just memorizing it for a test, is to keep the them entertained so each student is more likely to come to class.
