I have been a tutor since I was a junior in high school. I completed all of my volunteer work in high school as a tutor for second grade students that had difficulties in reading and/or math. My job was to give struggling students a one-on-one tutoring experience by holding weekly reading and math tutoring sessions in order to boost the child's reading and math grades enough for them to be able to continue on to the third grade and the FCAT.
Shortly after high school, I tutored using a tutor referral service for the first 3 semesters of college. I mainly tutored college freshman in their respective general chemistry courses. Tutoring chemistry made me realize my true passion for teaching and I decided to become an education major.
I took many prerequisite education courses and during those courses, such as "Inquiry Approaches to Teaching," I received the full classroom experience. In "Inquiry Approaches to Teaching" I made science lesson plans for a class of lower socioeconomic second grade students. After I made the lesson plan during class, I tested the effectiveness of the lesson plan by teaching the lesson plan directly to the students and accessing what they learned and gained from the lesson. The experience was extremely rewarding because the kids seemed to really enjoy and learn from the interactive science lessons.
I also volunteered for the kindergarten class that I was observing for my "Introduction to Education" course to meet requirements for my "Teaching Diverse Populations" course. I assisted in making materials for their in-class projects and I decided to pursue early childhood education because of the experience.
I got into the competitive College of Education program at FSU, but I decided to take a different direction because of my academic interest and need to study Spanish. Overall, I feel that my prerequisite education courses and my personal tutoring experience have provided a solid foundation for my instructional skills.
