My musical education began in the inchoate memories of childhood-my mother singing in the kitchen, my father lost in Handel at the Piano, sitting for countless hours at the piano bench, legs dangling over the side, making my first joyous attempts at music making. Unlike many Pianists, I learned first by ear, and only later went on to study formally and pursue mastery in my instrument.
Rigorous study is essential for any serious player - a mastering of technique and theory will broaden the scope of what a musician can express, just as a mastering of vocabulary will make one a more eloquent speaker - but my memories of playing purely for joy as a child are some of my fondest, the root of my continuing passion for music as an adult, and it is this honest joy that I want to share with my own students as a teacher, albeit amidst learning the fundamentals of technique and theory.
In my classes, you will thoroughly learn the fundamentals of piano playing, mastering Music Theory, Musical Notation, and Physical Facility, but the direction of your musical aspirations I leave to you. Learn to play the Classical masters, learn to accompany yourself as a vocalist, learn to improvise as a Jazz Pianist, or bring in your favorite Amy Winehouse album and learn the piano part. Together, we'll work on the fundamentals of Pianistic Technique, and explore music making as a means of joyous expression.
