Finding new ways to learn is a key aspect of growth, and learning in any subject should always be approached from multiple angles as every student is different in how they learn. He won the 2010 Johnstown Symphony Young Artist Competition and as a result of this competition, Michael performed Allen Feinstein's Concerto for Euphonium: Swimming the Mountain with the Johnstown symphony in March 2011. Michael also won the IUP Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition the same year and, as a result, performed the world premiere of Anthony O'Toole’s Concerto for Euphonium at IUP.
